University Of Aarhus:

University Of Aarhus Outside the capital, good but not lavish hotels are available. The Grand, in Odense, is perhaps the best small-city one. In Aarhus, the largest provincial city, the three R's, Regina, Ritz and Royal, are recommend-able, especially the last-named; and in Aalborg, the Ph0nix is by far the best. More economical hotels in those three cities are: Odense—the Axelhus and the Windsor; Aarhus—the Central; Aalborg—the Central and the Kong Frederik.

5. Modern and Contemporary Art The Danish painters whose works are in the State Art Gallery may be considered moderns, for the systematic encouragement of them and the collecting of their works did not begin until 1824. In architecture there is much for Danes to be proud of. The Grundtvig Memorial Church (Copenhagen) has been mentioned, but I think of many other boldly designed structures, for example the Great Hall of the University of Aarhus, where modernity is rampant but does not run amuck.

R0MER, ru'msr, Ole, Danish astronomer: b. Aarhus, Sept. 25, 1644; d. Copenhagen, Sept. 19, 1710. After studying at the University of Copenhagen, he spent ten years in Paris, where he made observations in the royal observatory and was elected to the Academy. In 1681 he was made professor of mathematics and director of the observatory at Copenhagen, and subsequently became a councilor of state. He is known chiefly as the discoverer of the velocity of light, which he determined by observation of the eclipses of the satellites of Jupiter.
