Travel Smart: Six pocket-size booklets called travel smart Tips For . . . , covering Britain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal, the whole set sold for a dollar, have been published by TWA since 1954 and I find them as compact, useful and accurate as any such guides I have known. They are pocket Baedekers of 60 to 100 pages each and the heaviest of them weighs only 2% ounces. As corollary to these, the company publishes, and distributes gratis, pocket maps of London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Lisbon, Athens, Zurich and Geneva. They're as smart in irtography as the handbooks are in guidance.Very inexpensive hotels are found in all Danish cities, a special feature of thrift being the so-called Mission Hotels. They are clean and well run and you may have a single room for $1 to $1.50, a double room for about $2, service included. They are a wonderful travel smart bargain, and smart students, whatever their religion or lack of it, use them right along. No alcoholic beverages are served, yet you should by no means confuse these pleasant Danish Mission Hotels with the frankly dismal "Temperance Hotels" of Britain. They're a wholly different breed.
The National Geographic is the prototype of the travel smart magazines which supply a good market for the roving cameraman. It is a good text for study before you go on a picture-shooting trip. If you can understand and can supply what they want at National Geographic, you should be able to sell to the other travel smart magazines, too. The purely travel smart magazines represent only a narrow slice of the market for travel smart pictures, however. All the general magazines use travel smart material, too, in one form or another. A popular form is the picture story which deals in great detail with just one phase of life or one typical activity in any locality. |
