Travel Directory: The hometown photographer who forfeits the church directories to outsiders is doing less for his community than he or she should be doing. He or she should do the directory—in a quality manner—with a choice of proofs from negatives of good size rather than 35mm transparencies. The average sale will be about $30 per sitting in a normal situation. The photographer should figure $2 to $3 off the top for the cost of putting out the directory, because it should be a credit to the church and to the photographer. Even if the directory turns out to be only a break-even proposition, the photographer has gained by building for the future through exposure to people who can be of benefit with good word-of-mouth advertising.Freighter guides and directories are published energetically and frequently by Harian Publications, Greenlawn, New York. You can get a world of paper-bound information on the subject for a dollar. Two of Marian's booklets that I have found gold mines of lore are Freighter Life and travel directory Routes Around the World. The latter, an annual, is sub-titled "The travel directoryer's Directory to Passenger-Carrying Freighters, Liners and Airplanes." Harian can be a needed friend-in-print to supplement what information your regular travel directory agent may have on this ever-ramifying subject.
The National Geographic is the prototype of the travel directory magazines which supply a good market for the roving cameraman. It is a good text for study before you go on a picture-shooting trip. If you can understand and can supply what they want at National Geographic, you should be able to sell to the other travel directory magazines, too. The purely travel directory magazines represent only a narrow slice of the market for travel directory pictures, however. All the general magazines use travel directory material, too, in one form or another. A popular form is the picture story which deals in great detail with just one phase of life or one typical activity in any locality. |
