Travel Clothing: The National Geographic is the prototype of the travel clothing magazines which supply a good market for the roving cameraman. It is a good text for study before you go on a picture-shooting trip. If you can understand and can supply what they want at National Geographic, you should be able to sell to the other travel clothing magazines, too.
The purely travel clothing magazines represent only a narrow slice of the market for travel clothing pictures, however. All the general magazines use travel clothing material, too, in one form or another. A popular form is the picture story which deals in great detail with just one phase of life or one typical activity in any locality.5 The staff are all geared up to take some of the burden off the shoulders of the already overloaded education welfare officer. We try to find out why children are absent, and give advice about domestic problems involving children and their welfare. We organize the collection of welfare clothing parcels if mums have several small children and find it difficult to travel clothing. When one mum was in the last weeks of pregnancy we organized an escort for her child to be taken for speech therapy at the local clinic. We also did this for a parent who would have lost her job if she had had to take time off to attend these sessions.
Finally, ask to interview in your studio the models with whom you might work. Set specific appointments and see if they are prompt, decently dressed, and professional in manner. They should be able to sell themselves to you. You might even put them in front of some seamless background paper and take a half dozen test shots to see how you react with each other. Once you are satisifed that the models available to you can handle the expected work, find out what the price will be under all possible conditions. There may be a fee charged for travel clothing time. You may be expected to supply the models with clothing or the models may be expected to have a reasonably-versatile Wardrobe for use when posing for photographs other than fashion pictures. You cannot estimate the costs for an assignment unless you know all the expenses you might encounter. |
