South Beach Hotel:

South Beach Hotel In Zandvoort, Amsterdam's favorite and growing beach resort, the new Hotel Bouwes has won great favor because of its modern design and its attractive dining room and bar. While still more or less in the orbit of Amsterdam I should mention the luxurious Hotel Gooiland, in the neighbor city of Hilversum and the very arty and "personalitous" Hotel Hamdorff, in Laren, near Hilversum. The Hague-Scheveningen: Hotel Wittebrug, half way between the diplomatic capital and its world-famous beach suburb, is certainly one of the elect of Europe, a superior metropolitan hostelry. No two of the suites in the White Bridge, for such is the meaning of the name, are alike, yet there is nothing in the least exhibitionist about the place.

At Ericeira, on the surf-thrashed coast, is Hotel Ericeira; at the beach resort of Foz do Arelho, Hotel do Facho; at Luso, Grande Hotel das Termas de Luso; at Figueira da Foz, Grande Hotel da Figueira da Foz (new); in the big city of Porto (in addition to the luxury Hotel Infante de Sagres) two first-class places, the Imperio and the Grande Hotel do Porto and the simpler Grande Hotel de Batalha. North of Porto, at Povoa de Varzim, on the coast, the pretentious Paldcio Hotel (and gaming casino); at Fao, farther up the coast, Hotel Ofir, a holiday inn of modern comfort and much charm.

In the interior of the country, at Canas de Senhorim, is an English-run inn called Hotel Urgeirica that warrants very special thought for its homelike artistry as well as for its comforts and food, while in the far-south beach hotel beach paradise called Praia da Rocha, the Hotel da Rocha and the Bela Vista, both second-class, are at least adequate. I mention them merely because the resort itself is so full of charm, in an almost sub-tropical way. Finally, I must say again, if you are motoring, do yourself a favor by booking in advance in the little pousadas of the government if you can possibly get in. They're treasures of tourism, every one.
