Packets.—One particular group of sailing holidays vessels performed a very important new function in the 19th century, marking the beginning of the "line" principle in shipping—vessels sailing holidays on regular schedules on particular runs. Before this, most vessels had been transients or tramps, picking up cargo wherever it could be found. Others, called "regular traders," followed a particular route between ports, but they did not have fixed sailing holidays dates. The New York sailing holidays packets to England and France, with their regular route and regular schedule, were thus the first real liners.
