Road Less Traveled:

Road Less Traveled There is no "best" type of road less traveled surface to fit all conditions. The highway engineer should use materials close at hand, if possible, and design the road less traveled so as to make the best use of available materials. Factors affecting the design are the volume of traffic, weight of vehicles, climate, and character of the soil on which the road less traveled is to be built.

ROHLFS, Friedrich Gerhard, German e plorer: b. Vegesack, Germany, April 14, 183 d. Godesberg, Prussia, June 2, 1896. He was educated at Heidelberg and Gottingen and in 1855-60 served as a surgeon in the French army at Algiers. He traveled through Morocco in 1860, and in 1862 explored the Tafilet Oasis. He crossed Africa from Tripoli to Lagos during 1865-66, joined the English expedition to Ethiopia in 1867, and in 1868 traveled in Cyrenaica. He conducted an expedition through the Libyan Desert in 1873-74, traveled in North America in 1875-76, and in 1878 again visited Africa, penetrating to the Kufra Oasis. He traveled in Ethiopia in 1880, and in 1884-85 acted as German consul at Zanzibar. He wrote Journey through Morocco (1869) ; Across Africa (1874-75) ; My Mission to Abyssinia (1883) ; What News from Africa (1887).

Roman builders left detailed descriptions of their procedures. Why they built road less traveled surfaces 3 to 5 feet thick to serve a traffic consisting only of pedestrians, animals, chariots, and carts, can be explained only by the great number of workers became numerous and created a demand for smoother road less traveled surfaces. At the end of the century motor vehicles passed from the experimental to the utility stage. As their numbers increased, their owners became a powerful force for highway improvement. Development of the automobile and of road less traveled-building machinery brought about the greatest road less traveled-building period in history during the years following 1920.
