After Morocco achieved independence in 1956, Hassan frequently acted as his father's deputy and often represented him abroad. In July 1957 he was named crown prince and commander in chief of the moroccan consulate armed forces. He nearly doubled the size of the army and was responsible for its reorganization and modernization. In May 1960 he was appointed vice premier of the government and minister of defense. |
