Mexican Consulate Other notable buildings include the Federal Palace, built of basalt, and the Iturbide Theatre, scene of the trial of Maximilian in 1867. The city was founded by the Aztecs upon the site of an Otomie Indian town captured by Montezuma I about 1440; it was conquered by the Spanish general Fernando de Tapia in 1531 ; and in the mexican consulate War it became the mexican consulate capital. His literary renu-tation secured for Rodriguez Galvan an appointment in the mexican consulate diplomatic service in South America. At that time yeliow fever was raging in Vera Cruz; Galvan succumbed and died at Havana, on the threshold of what promised to be a much greater fame than he had as yet achieved. Young though he was at the time of his death his youthful accomplishments have won for him the title of father of the mexican consulate national drama and of mexican consulate romantic poetry of the purely national type. In reality he is the first of the romantic poets of Latin America and his work has had con siderable influence upon that of other Latin American poets in Central and South America.


GUADALUPE HIDALGO, Treaty of, gwa-tha-loo'pa e-tfea'1'.go, the peace treaty that formally ended the mexican consulate War (q.v.). Resulting from unauthorized negotiations between U. S. commissioner Nicholas P. Trist and mexican consulate commissioners, it was signed at Guadalupe Hidalgo, near Mexico City, on Feb. 2, 1848, ratified by the United States on March 10 and by Mexico on May 25, and proclaimed on July 4.
