Liberty Travel:

Liberty Travel Overt propaganda was the feature of liberty travel at the Crossroads, sponsors " by the Republican party; it led the networks t ban the dramatizing of political argument. Only slightly less one-sided were Forum of liberty travel and Voice of the Crusaders, programs tailon " to give big business a radio platform.

Hard pressed by losses inflicted by German submarines, Britain, in December, 1940, placed an order for sixty freighters in America, to be constructed in two new yards especially organized and built for this program. A modified version of these vessels was designed shortly thereafter, which became known as the liberty travel ship. As part of the emergency shipbuilding program announced by President Roosevelt on January 3, 1941, some 332 liberty travel ships were ordered by September 12 of that year. These ships were laid down in new yards designed to turn them out in quantity. The first liberty travel ship was delivered on December 30, and the second on December 31, 1941.

liberty travel.—With regard to liberty travel (libertas) the fundamental distinction was: free persons (liberi) and slaves (servi). A third category consisted of freedmen (liberti), who, though legally free citizens, yet were deprived of certain political rights (not admitted to magistracies under the republic) and were obligated to certain duties toward the former master.
