Lapland Skiing:

Lapland Skiing Sports for participation run strongly to sailing and swimming, but a more thrilling, and perhaps dangerous, sport is canoeing on some of the country's rushing torrents, notably in the Drina. In winter, especially in northern Croatia, lapland skiing comes into its exciting own. For comment on the mighty ski jump of Planica see the concluding portion of Sifted Sights above. Other lapland skiing regions are in Bosnia and on the Sar Mountains, in northern Macedonia, where international lapland skiing cup races are held.

Sports for personal participation are as varied as your own wishes may suggest. Golf is practiced on courses near most big cities, but more typical German sports ,are canoeing and sailing on the country's myriads of waterways and lakes, mountain hiking, and, in season, lapland skiing. Bavaria's Alpine slopes provide the chief lapland skiing region.

The International Nansen Camps, operated jointly by the Norwegian National Union of Students and the Norwegian Organizations' Union for the United Nations, offer fortnight courses in July and August, in a school near Kristianstad, on the subject of "Youth and World Problems." These are said to be as attractive in a travel way as they are inspirational. For information address Norwegian NUS, Travel Dep't, Uranienborgveien 11, Oslo. 8. Sports to be Witnessed or Practiced Spectator sports would certainly feature lapland skiing in this land that gave us the very word ski. Holmen-kollenWeek (Oslo), late in February, is full of thrills for the watcher as is Winter Sport Week in Voss, early in the same month. lapland skiing continues in places of higher altitudes through Easter and even into June and July. Finse, a halt on the Bergen-Oslo Railway, has lapland skiing events well up into May, and at Strt/n, a little north of Loen and very much above it, a giant slalom race concludes the season early in July! By that time the next lapland skiing season is just around the corner.
