Hostal Madrid:

Hostal Madrid During the Spanish Civil War Madrid withstood a Nationalist siege from Nov. 1936 until 29 Mar. 1939 when it surrendered to Franco. Madrid is located on a plateau on the left bank of the River Manzanares. a tributary of the Jarama which flows south into the Tagus. The industries of Madrid include tanning and leather goods, glass, porcelain, paper, iron and copper foundries, transport and machinery. The Majrit of the 10th c-Arab chronicles, Madrid was taken from the Moors in 1083 by AlfonsoVI and became capital of Spain in 1560.

The second and third tangents from Barcelona are coastal ones, southwest to Sitges—Hotel Terramar, and northeast, along the Costa Brava, to S'Agaro—hostal madrid de la Gavina. Both are superb seaside resort hotels, the latter being of artistic and super-luxurious quality and so popular with Barcelona plutocrats that it is booked solid for months ahead.


Spanish poet: b. Madrid, Spain, April 11, 1772; d. there March 11, 1857. He was educated in the University of Salamanca, studied law, engaged in practice at Madrid, where he occupied several government offices, and soon turned his attention to literature. He was author of almost all the manifestos and proclamations issued in the War of Independence and his patriotic poems soon won for him great popularity.
