Although Gondomar served Spain devotedly, using flattery and bribery to secure his ends, he did not have the full confidence of the Spanish court. The collapse of the marriage negotiations led to war between England and Spain, and Gondomar died a disappointed man in Spain, on Oct. 2, 1626. |
