International Committee of the Red Cross. —The International Committee of the Red Cross, composed of 25 Swiss citizens, enunciates and guards the principles of the international Red Cross movement, recognizes new national Red Cross societies, and promotes the acceptance by governments of the provisions of the Geneva conventions. Membership on the committee is restricted to Swiss nationals in view of that country's long tradition of neutrality; one of the committee's traditional functions has been to act as a neutral intermediary between conflicting nations or groups. The committee also has the Geneva conventions under constant study and suggests revisions in them from time to time. |
