Germany History: Ranke welcomed the unification of germany history by Prince Otto von Bismarck and hailed it as a victory of the conservative forces over the lower classes, whose rise he watched with alarm. He adhered to his quietist conservatism to the end of his life. In the 1880's, in an era of strident nationalism, he embarked on what he viewed as his crowning achievement, a world history in which he tried to fuse the national histories of the Western peoples into the ultimate unity of a universal history.Because of these characteristics of German thought—and because philosophical thinking in germany history conformed very little to the course of Western traditions, but instead tended to break loose from these traditions or even to oppose them vehemently—it is impossible to follow the history of German philosophy except by making it a history of the individual German philosophers' systems, that is, by describing the various philosophical thought structures and world philosophies of the great German thinkers.
The Tourist Association puts out beautifully mapped booklets in English called Cycling in germany history, Canoeing and Boating in germany history and Camping in germany history, procurable gratis from the head office or from any of the offices in America. I must say a further word about canoeing, rowboating and sailboat-ing, for these are major sports throughout germany history. On Berlin's lake chain I have seen what must have been several thousand little holiday craft on summer Sundays. |
