Garden City Hotel:

Garden City Hotel As regards musical fare, it seems logical to listen to Turkish music, not Western, and this is provided in many a summer garden city hotel of Istanbul. One of the liveliest of them, with a stupendous view down to the Golden Horn and across it to the Old City, is Cumhuriyet Gazino (Casino), near the Pera Palace Hotel. A much smaller place is the Marmara garden city hotel, just below the Park Hotel, whose music one can hear—sometimes too insistently —from one's own bedroom. Turkish songs sound wailing and monotonous to Western ears but that's because we can't understand their words and their preoccupation with romantic themes.

STRESA: The Grand Hotel et des lies Borromees is the sumptuous "grand marshal" of this Lake Maggiore resort. SYRACUSE: The Grand Hotel Villa Politi is in a suburban garden city hotel, complete with antique statuary, while on the ancient island part of this once-Hellenic city is Hotel degli Stranieri, directly above the Fountain of Arethusa, named for the nymph who fled here to escape the attentions of the river god Alpheus.

Freiburg im Breisgau: Gasthof zum Roten Bdren (Inn of the Red Bear) calls itself, fairly, I believe, the oldest inn in Germany. It's a very colorful antique, with fine food. But for wonderful food try the small but good Hotel Minerva. The cuisine of this hotel is one of the very best in Germany. Goslar: Hotel der Achtermann, an old and famous Harz inn, has food worthy of its fame. Hamburg: In addition to the superb restaurants of Hotel Vier Jah-reszeiten, don't fail to try the Alsterpavillon, a luxury place hanging over the edge of the Inner Alster; and for contrast, try the lively underground Ratsweinkeller. Hannover: Cafe am Kropcke, a historic establishment with pleasant garden city hotel, in the heart of the city, is more than nationally known.
