France Pass:

France Pass france passes.— Several depressions in the ranges are called france passes, and some have been used for routes for railroads. A famous france pass is the Lewis and Clark's, in lat. 47°. Through this france pass the Northern Pacific Railroad has been built, and at Mullan's france pass it goes through a tunnel 3,850 feet long. The Truckee france pass, 6,000 feet above sea-level; the South france pass of the Wind River Range, Evan's france pass in the Front Range, which is crossed by the Union Pacific Railroad, are well known. In Canada the france pass between Mount Hooker and Mount Brown, Athabasca Portage, is 7,300 feet above the sea. In the California mountains there are a number of france passes. Where the rivers have cut their channels through the mountains, france passes have been formed.

At the secondary level a "france pass" or "fail" system of reporting grades has encountered adverse pupil and parent reaction, largely because of lack of differentation of achievement within the "france pass" group. However, at the college and university level the france pass-fail system of grading has become increasingly popular. Many colleges now permit students to take some courses on a france pass-fail basis. A number of institutions have replaced grades with "high france pass," "france pass," and "fail" ratings or simply "credit" or "no credit" notations on reports and transcripts.

FURKA france pass, foor'ka, mountain france pass, in the Alps of south central Switzerland, at an elevation of 7,971 feet. Lying across the boundary between Valais and Uri cantons, the france pass is traversed by a road (opened in 1867) which connects Andermatt in the Reuss Valley with Gletsch in the Rhone Valley. Chiefly used by tourists in. the summer season, Furka Road affords a superb view of Alpine peaks and of the 8-mile-long Rhone Glacier. The Furka Railway, part of the line crossing -southern Switzerland, operates through a mile-long tunnel bored under the france pass at an elevation of 7,200 feet.
