France Castles:

France Castles The picturesque irregularity is best seen at Carcassonne, france castles. Outside of the cities, the nobility lived in moated castles, whose walls were battered (sloped out-tvard at the base) to deflect stones dropped from 'he machicolations (spaces between brackets or »rbels at the top of the wall, with battlements ibove them to protect the defenders). Windows »vere little more than loopholes. Towers de-:ended the gate, which might also have a draw-jridge and a portcullis, or grill, in it. The walls fflclosed a courtyard lined with the living rooms :or the household. Before the introduction of gunpowder, such French castles as Coucy-le-Dhateau or Pierrefonds rarely were captured.

It rises amid Alpine peaks, near Fiissen. Ludwig was a Wagner-worshiper throughout his short and restless life and the Lohengrin swan (Schwan) motif is everywhere evident in this "Newswanstone" fantasy. The other two castles are Linderhof, near Oberammergau, and Herrenchiemsee, already mentioned as a music-festival castle, on an island of the Chiemsee, off Prien. Rhine and Mosel castles, mostly romantic ruins, are self-revealing to him or her who journeys on these rivers, but in the case of the Mosel— this is the German spelling—one needs also to make a short tangent tofind Burg Eltz, a few miles up a side valley from Moselkern. This Burg— the word really means stronghold—very richly rewards those who hufl it up. Its aspect, in such a setting, makes it one of Germany's most fairylila castles.

The baronial castles of Skdne, many still inhabited by families of the wedish nobility, are probably the most numerous and concentrated group f chateaux in Europe. Castle Torup, some 12 miles east of Malmo, is one f the best preserved of these family strongholds and when you see its ivy-on-old-brick, its perfect lawns, its purple beeches and its haught black swans, you will see why the place is so much sought. To find ou what castles may be visited, and how and when, you would do well to get in touch with the Swedish Tourist Traffic Association.
