Finnish Composer: Luxury Touring and Lodging Travelers don't come to Finland to look for luxury travel, in the full sense of that word, though there are luxuries to be enjoyed. First, there are excellent and very frequent steamers from Stockholm to Turku (Abo) and from Stockholm to Helsinki; or you may fly in swift comfort from the Swedish to the Finnish capital by SAS (many flights daily) or by Pan American. Within Finland, you may fly from Helsinki to nine Finnish towns by Finnish Airlines Company Aero OY.J. Music and Drama Festivals The Sibelius Festival, inaugurated in 1950, is now a fixture, occurring annually, for eight days, about the middle of June. Finland's two symphony orchestras, led by outstanding Finnish conductors like Tauno Hannikainen and also foreign celebrities (Stokow-ski, when I attended), play the Sibelius symphonies in the Great Hall of the University, where the master himself first conducted, in 1892, and they supplement these classics with the interesting compositions of less-known modern Finnish composers.
10. Places of Pilgrimage Finland, like all her Scandinavian sister lands, is strongly Lutheran and has no pilgrim shrines, in the Catholic sense. If veneration of a great Finnish personage were to involve pilgrimage, it might center, surprisingly enough, around a poet, Johan Ludwig Runeberg, who wrote many patriotic poems, including Our Land, the Finnish national anthem. Actually, Runeberg's birthday, February 5, is the occasion for country-wide patriotic observances. |
