European Travel:

European Travel OUR VANISHING VISAS Visas have virtually vanished from the icture of European tourist travel and a great share of the credit for this 'onderful disappearing act must go to the European Travel Commission, 'hose efforts to achieve it were patient and tireless. All except four of lat 21 ETC countries have abandoned, one by one, the irksome visa re-uirement for Americans and this is a vast relief.

A tourist-fare development of great importance to planners for a; European vacation took place in the spring of 1954, when this type of: travel, and tariffs, was extended so as to cover direct flights via Lisbon to i southern European cities. Until that time the tourist fare applied only on 1 the northern European routes and thence southward throughout Europe, i also at tourist rates, to the desired destinations.

Since 1929 I have been in Europe a total of 120 months, which is nearly half of all the months there have been, excluding the war years. Over thirty books of travel have resulted from these crisscross wanderings, and the present volume is their lineal descendant, put through the wringer of new and extensive travels. An eight-month Odyssey has been completed just now, in a revisiting campaign that took me to all the 21 countries that have united to form the European Travel Commission.
