RAHBEK, ra'bek, Knud Lyne, Danish writer and critic: b. Kobenhavn '(Copenhagen). Dec. 18, 1760; d. Valby, near Copenhagen, April 22, 1830. As professor of esthetics (1790-1798), and of history (1799-1805), at Copenhagen, director of the dramatic school (1805-1816), and member of the group directing the national theater (1809-1830), he was an important precursor of the Danish romantic movement.

In 1826, Rask declined an appointment in edinburgh to copenhagen for patriotic reasons. When finally, in 1831, he was named professor of Oriental languages at the University of Copenhagen, he was so exhausted by his strenuous travels and studies that he remarked: "I fear it is too late." He died the next year. With Jacob Grimm, he can be considered a founder of Germanic philology.
