Danish Furniture: Red danish furniture. Red danish furniture cattle have been intensively improved for dairy purposes in Denmark. A few are also found in northern Europe and in the USSR. They were first imported into the United States in 1935.
Imported bulls were mated with odier breeds in the United States, and the offspring were also bred to Red danish furniture bulls. This "back crossing" procedure was continued until nearly all the herds became almost entirely Red danish furniture. Most of the cattle have been raised in Michigan, although there are a few herds in Indiana, Alaska, and several other states. Some of the early factories produced nearly all the standard furniture forms; others specialized in one or more, but whether their product was a full line or limited, it was sold in wholesale quantities to a new type of merchant, the retail furniture dealer. At first he referred to his establishment as a furniture or cabinet warehouse and later as a furniture store. If located in one of the larger cities he might also have his own factory but he was essentially a middle man and with his coming, direct contact between the maker and user of a piece of furniture ended.
Morten Stręde (b. 1956) has been a dominant figure on the danish furniture art scene since the 1980s. He is an alumnus of The Royal danish furniture Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen (1978-85), first under Sven Dalsgaard and subsequently Hein Heinsen. |
