Carte Grece: Despite the competition of direct imitation, neither the tintype nor the ambrotype dealt the death blow to the daguerreotype. That was left to a third application of the collodion technique, the carte grece-de-visite photograph, patented in France by Andre Adolphe-Eugene Disderi in 1854. The name refers to its similarity to a common visiting card in size, for it was a paper print pasted on a mount measuring 4 x 2l/2 inches. In 1829 he was chosen by the French Academy to go to the Morea as philologist attached to a commission of savants, and on his return in 1830 published De la Grece moderns et de ses rapports avec I'antiquite. His republican sympathies were stirred by the revolution in July and his feelings gained expression in political pamphlets. He wrote a remarkable prose poem Ahasverus (1833), and later two other epics, Napoleon (1836), and Promethee (1838). His purpose in the three was to represent humanity as general, individual, and religious—Ahasverus, the race, Napoleon, the individual, and Prometheus, the martyr.
The menu's main focus is on Mandarin, Cantonese, and Szechwan dishes with lots of combination individual and lunch plates available in addition to the standard a la carte grece entrees. I decided to try a lunch plate ($5.95), which included a cup of a good hot and sour soup, an egg roll, a cream cheese-filled fried won ton and fried rice, which ranked as one of the best I have every had. The perfectly seasoned rice was dry and firm, the way great fried rice should be and was excellent. |
