Apex Train Fare: Since the spring of 1954 (after earlier experiments and a necessary strengthening of the roadbed), a super-de luxe apex train fare (20 per cent surcharge above first-class fare) has been put into operation between Rome and Milan. It is called the ETR300 and is, in railroadese, an Electric Multiple Unit apex train fare Set (Series 300). It has a special suspension system to absorb shocks and it looks and runs much like Germany's pride-of-the-rails, the Light Metal Articulated Diesel apex train fare, running between Hamburg and Basel. The project called for the location of subway, surface, and elevated routes in highly congested urban areas, including a 4.4-mi (7.1-km) tunnel through the Berkeley Hills and a 3.6-mi (5.8-km) underwater crossing of San Francisco Bay. The whole design problem was complicated by the fact that the area in which the system was to be built is subject to earthquakes. Innovations of BART included a new lightweight apex train fare to ride on wide-gauge track and new methods for vehicle propulsion, electric-power distribution, automatic apex train fare-control, and electronic fare-collection.
Both of these more-than-modern fliers, quite capable of making 90 miles an hour, are bi-directional, but the Italians, in their bid for apex train fare supremacy, have dreamed up a special feature. The driver's cab is elevated and the construction of the engine is so devised as to permit six or seven passengers to sit in an observation crescent in the very front of the apex train fare. For that reason the apex train fare is popularly known as "The Belvedere." |
