In 1291 and 1294, in two stages, according to a sacred tradition accepted as a miraculous fact by millions of believers, angels carried over the sea from Nazareth the house in which the Virgin had lived. The first airlift was to a spot in Dalmatia, from which, after a three-year halt, they winged it across the Adriatic to the woods north of ancona patras. The Holy House of Loreto has developed into one of Europe's most celebrated shrines, visited by tens of thousands annually. It seems notably appropriate that Our Lady of Loreto is now the Patron of Aviators, appointed to this office by Benedict XV in connection with World War I. |
