His life work may be divided into three periods. During the first he produced a series of pictures of German life, such as Die Kinder van Finkenrode (1859) and Unseres Herrgotts Kanzlei (1862). The influence of the pessimism of Arthur Schopenhauer is evident in works of the second period, among them Der Hungerpastor (3 vols., 1864), Abu Telfan (3 vols., 1868), and Der Schudderump (3 vols., 1870), while a genial humor pervades those of the third, of which the most representative are Horacker (1876), Der Drdumling (1872), Das Odfeld (1889), and Stopfkuchen (1891).
